The new US News & World Report Graduate ratings are out. Each year, they rate/rank graduate Colleges of Business, Education, Engineering, Law, and Medicine and publish these in the regular issue of US News & World Report. Thus, these overall ratings get the most press. These ratings include variables beyond reputation. In addition, they publish an annual “Best Graduate Schools” guidebook which includes ratings in specialty areas and in areas beyond the above professional schools. These are based solely on reputation. Not all areas are updated annually.

There are obvious limitations to the methodology. Our strengths lie in our research-oriented graduate programs (only Biological Sciences rated this year), and we need to remind people of that since more attention will probably be directed at the professional schools’ ratings.

Highlights for UA and ASU:

• Eller tied for 59^th. ASU tied for 41^st; down from 34 last year. In 2005, Eller ranked 40^th, down from 35^th the prior year.

  • Accounting: ASU tied for 24^th

  • Entrepreneurship: We’re tied for 13^th

  • MIS: 5^th; ASU tied for 15^th

  • Supply chain/logistics: ASU= 3rd

• College of law ranked 44^th, slightly down from 43 last year, 41 in 2006, 43^rd in 2005. ASU slightly up to 51 from 53^rd.

  • ASU 19^th in Legal Writing

• Education: We are 56^th; ASU ranks 31.

  • Administration/Supervision: ASU tied for 24^th

  • Counseling: ASU tied for 12^th

  • Curriculum/Instruction: ASU tied for 19^th

  • Ed Psych: ASU tied for 16^th

  • Ed Policy: ASU tied for 13^th

  • El Ed: ASU tied for 19^th

  • Higher Ed: We’re tied for 17^th

  • Special Ed: ASU = 21st

• Engineering: We are 55; ASU ranks 50.

  • Aerospace: tied for 32^nd; ASU tied for 28^th

  • Biomed: 49^th; ASU tied for 30^th

  • Chemical Engr tied for 47^th; ASU=tied for 44^th

  • Civil: tied for 31^st; tied for 36^th

  • Computer Engineering: tied for 37^th; ASU tied for 43^rd

  • Electrical/electronic: tied for 35^th; ASU tied for 26^th

  • Environmental: UA & ASU tied for 25^th

  • Industrial: tied for 23^rd; ASU tied for 19^th

  • Materials: tied for 46^th; ASU tied for 36^th

  • Mechanical: tied for 44^th; ASU tied for 38th

• Medicine: We are NOT in the top 100 in Medicine (research); but 63^rd in primary care.

• Biological Sciences: We are 42 (down from 36^th); ASU=58. We are not in the top 25 for any specialties. (last year we were 13^th in Ecology/Evolutionary Biology)

• Audiology: We’re tied for 8^th; ASU at 24^th.

• Clinical Psych: tied for 26^th; ASU tied for 38^th.

• Health Care Management: ASU tied for 25^th. We’re not listed in top 50

• Nursing (master’s): tied for 26^th; ASU for 32^nd. Nurse Practitioner (pediatric): ASU = tied for 13^th.

• PharmD= tied for 4^th

• Public Health: tied for 21^st.

• Rehab Counseling: 5^th

• Speech-Language Pathology: tied for 6^th; ASU=tied for 22^nd.

From last year (these rated in 2006).

• We are 38^th in Chemistry; ASU is 49^th

  • We are 4^th in Analytical

• We are 40^th in Computer Science; ASU is 51^st.

• We are 8^th in Earth Sciences: ASU is 31^st.

  • We are 16^th in Geochemistry

  • 7^th in Geology

  • 12^th in Geophysics and Seismology

• We are 42 in Math; ASU is 63.

  • 13^th in Applied Math

• We are 35^th in Physics; ASU is 55
