Master of Arts: The M.A. degree requires a total of 31 units of credit for 500-level courses in sociology, including seven required courses: SOC 500a, 570a, 570b, 575, 580,595a (a 1-credit colloquium), and 596c (a 1-credit teaching seminar). No formal master's thesis is required. The master's program is designed for students who intend to continue work toward the Ph.D. Doctor of Philosophy.
The Ph.D. degree requires a total of 70 units of graduate credit, including credits taken during the master's program. These credit hours must include 18 hours of dissertation credit. At least 51 hours of credit must be in courses in sociology, the major subject. In addition to completion of the required courses for the M.A. degree, students must complete (1) four seminars in substantive areas of sociology, and (2) one course in advanced methods or statistics. Students must also pass written comprehensive examinations in each of two areas and an oral examination over both areas. Finally, they must write and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation in a final oral examination. There is no language requirement. Students have the option of minoring in another department.
Admission requirements: Admission to the graduate program is offered to a limited number of students demonstrating academic excellence and professional promise. To receive consideration for fall admission with financial aid, completed applications must be received by January 1st. Late applications will not be accepted.
