Course Purpose:This course is a requirement of the UA Ronald E. McNair Achievement Program. 

Course Grading: Grading will be based on attendance and the quality of students’ participation as demonstrated in class discussion and some written work. Please note that because this is a seminar class that attendance is essential. Failure to regularly attend class will negatively impact the attendance portion of your grade as well as the written work that is required.


Final grades will be based on the following point system:

Attendance (40 points)

Written work (60 points): 

Students will be provided with points for the individual meetings that they attend with their McNair advisor (20 points total). 10 points for the first meeting prior to Feb 15th  and 10 points for the second meeting prior to April 4th. 

Students will be provided with points for writing up a minimum of three questions for the panel discussions that are scheduled throughout the semester (40 points total). Ten points for each of the following panels: 1) Grad school admissions on Feb 8th 2) First year graduate students on Feb 22nd 3) New faculty on March 7th and 4) 3rd+ year graduate students on March 28th.

February 1       Grad school interviewing and recruitment weekends: Discussion   

February 8       Grad school admissions/Faculty panel – 3 questions due

February 15     Individual meetings – 1st meeting completed by Feb 15th

February 22     First year graduate student panel – 3 questions due

February 29     Class discussion

March 7           New faculty panel - 3 questions due by the end of class

March 14         NO CLASS: We always promise

March 21         NO CLASS: Spring Break!

March 28         3rd+ year graduate student panel – 3 questions due

April 4             Individual meetings – 2nd meeting completed by April 4th

April 11           Class discussion

April 18           Class discussion
