Application Overview

The UA Coverdell application consists of an online application form, short response questions, essay responses, your resume and signed copies of all of your Peace Corps Descriptions of Service.

To submit your application form you will need to complete the form and upload all attachments in one session.

Please follow the steps below in preparing your application.

  • Download and review the application form before assembling the documents you need to complete your responses.
  • Prepare essay responses and your resume on your local computer.
  • Save essay and resume files as a doc, docx or pdf for uploading. Format your file names with your last name, e.g. Doe_J_resume.
  • Scan and save each DOS as a single PDF. A signed DOS is preferred. If you have not yet completed your Peace Corps service, you may submit a draft or unsigned copy. If selected as a Fellow, a signed copy of the final DOS must be submitted prior to the start of classes. Upload a single DOS for each tour of Peace Corps service you had.
  • When submitting information in the form, insert the cursor in the form box and enter or paste  your responses.
  • Save a copy of your application to your own files, either downloading or taking screen shots of your application.

You will receive an automatic acknowledgement upon successful submission of your application. The Coverdell Fellows office will email you within a week of submission to confirm that we have received it.

Essay Questions
Please respond to each writing prompt with no more than one page per prompt. Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, and one-inch margins for each response. Please title your file using the format: Last Name_Essays etc. You may upload files as doc, docx or pdf files. Scan the three essays into a single document to upload.

Essay 1: Reflect on a specific challenge you experienced during your volunteer experience in Peace Corps or in other international service. Describe a specific situation, how your responded, including  your approach to gathering, mobilizing and utilizing resources. Evaluate the experience in terms your personal development and community results at the point of writing this reflection. How did this experience affect the remainder of your service and your attitude towards international/domestic development? What did you personally learn? We are interested in your reflections, persistence, and lessons learned.

Essay 2: Describe a specific situation in which you had a leadership role OR a specific situation in which you were a key part of a well-working team. What was the situation? What was your role and why were you in it? What challenges did you have to overcome? What did the group achieve? We want to get an idea of your leadership or teamwork experience and key lessons learned that affect your future direction.

Essay 3: The third question has three parts.

  1. What are your long-term career goals? If you do not yet have clear career goals, you can focus on populations with which you would like to work and problems/opportunities with which you would like to be involved.
  2. What do you want to study at the UA and why do you want to study it? How will this move you towards your goals?
  3. What makes you a good fit with the Tucson community and the Coverdell Fellows program? How will your experiences to date integrate with your academic and professional goals? Please be specific about your strengths and skills that will allow you to benefit an underserved community in southern Arizona. Your response should reflect your awareness of regional issues and opportunities.
Combine your three one-page essays into a single file and upload as a doc, docx or pdf. Please label with your name and description, e.g. Doe_J_essays.

RESUME
The resume is used for both review purposes, and is also distributed to potential agencies. Your resume should reflect your education, honors, awards, work experience, outcomes and accomplishments, and specific skills and credentials that qualify you for the type of work/service that interests you. Applicants selected as Fellows will have an opportunity to update their resume. The Peace Corps RPCV Career Center and your former university or college are good sources of information for developing a professional resume. If you are submitting more than one page, please scan into a single document to upload.

PEACE CORPS DESCRIPTION OF SERVICE (DOS)
Please upload your DOS for each country of Peace Corps service in a single pdf document. If you no longer have a copy of your DOS, you may contact U.S. Peace Corps for assistance. If you have not yet completed your service, you may submit an unsigned draft. A signed copy of the document is required of all matriculating Fellows by the start of classes. Please identify your file with your last name and the country of service e.g. Doe_J_DOS_Rwanda. Please scan multi-page documents into a single document to upload.
