Shilpita Sen, President, Graduate & Professional Student Council (GPSC)
Activity Informed Budgeting (AIB)
The New UArizona Funding System and Its Impact on Graduate Students

Dr. Brown is the chair of the AIB Graduate Committee and Shilpita Sen is a member of the committee.  Dr. Brown recently presented the AIB Graduate Committee recommendations to UArizona's key budget committee (SPBAC), but she doesn't know if the Provost will accept the committee's judgment.  The highest priorities were to maximize graduate students' financial support (and the resulting effects on time to degree, completiion, retention, climate, morale, educational debt, and especially diversity) and to protect interdisciplinarity.  The Provost's decisions about the committee's recommendations will have far-ranging consequences; we should know in a few months what she [the Provost] will do.

Student Funding Resources - Open discussion
1) Overview letter on graduate funding considerations: graduate_college_outreach_-_funding_resources.pdf (arizona.edu)
Excerpt Example: TIPS AND STRATEGIES: there is a lot to say about funding (caveats, unique opportunities, etc.) and it is NOT easy to be fully comprehensive in this letter. The search for funding takes time and planning, and in academia it is a life-long task. Graduate students must be diligent, focused and patient as they learn “how” funding works. Our advice is to:
     a) Submit the FAFSA annually - the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is required for need-based funding opportunities. Other donors also like to see a FAFSA on file as it shows independence and a desire to seek funding on your own. Additionally, if you have a financial emergency while in graduate school, a FAFSA allows you to quickly access need-based funds...
     b) Keep a record or spreadsheet and document all the funding opportunities you are eligible for: name, contact, application due date, supplemental material if required, response, etc
2) Graduate College Funding
3) Graduate College Office of Diversity & Inclusion Funding
4) Dr. Shelley Hawthorne-Smith works for the Graduate College's Office of Fellowships. See "Funding 101". In addition to funding support services, Shelley also publishes the excellent GradFunding Newsletter.
5) Graduate & Professional Student Council (GPSC) Funding Opportunities: Promising Practice Grant, Travel Grants, Research and Project Grants, Professional Opportunities Development Funding
