In the conducting emphasis concentrations are available in choral or instrumental/orchestral conducting. The PhD degree can be earned with emphases in either music theory or music education.
Additional details regarding graduate programs in the School of Music are available in the Graduate Handbook (http://music.arizona.edu/downloads/2011-2012_Grad_Handbook%283-12_revision%29.pdf) or from the Office of Academic Student Services in Music. The faculty admits applicants who exhibit superior academic and musical aptitude and who show evidence of growth in their chosen field(s) within music. All applicants must audition by personal interview or by submission of an audio or video recording.
All entering graduate students take diagnostic tests in music theory and music history/literature before beginning their coursework. Students will not be allowed to register for core musicology or theory courses until these examinations have been completed. Failure to take these exams prior to the start of coursework may delay degree completion.
Doctoral students should be prepared to take qualifying exams in their major and minor areas during their first semester of coursework, and DMA students perform a qualifying recital within the first two semesters of coursework. Upon successful completion of their qualifying examinations/recitals students prepare and submit their official plan of study, which governs the remainder of their academic work at the university.
Music Fees: All students registering for private instruction are charged special fees each semester according to the following schedule. One-half hour private lesson: $105 One-hour private lesson: $125.
