Description

Graduate programs in the department of Educational Psychology graduate prepare students for assuming productive roles in research, teaching, school counseling, and many other areas in which educational psychology is applied. The Department offers three programs: Master of Arts in Educational Psychology, Master of Education in School Counseling and Guidance, and Doctor of Philosophy with a major in Educational Psychology. (See Educational Psychology for info on the MA and PhD).

Master of Education - the Master of Education program in School Counseling and Guidance prepares students to excel in designing, implementing, and evaluating research-based school guidance programs that prepare all children for productive, successful lives. Designed with the input of an advisory board of school counselors from the community, the program responds particularly to the needs of Arizona schools by preparing graduates skilled in comprehensive, competency based school guidance, emphasizing collaboration with teachers, parents, and the larger educational community. The school counseling and guidance program is theory based: its top priority is advancing learning through the integration of teaching, research on school counseling, and active involvement with the schools of Southern Arizona.

Admission Requirements - admission to graduate programs in Educational Psychology is based on a careful and comprehensive evaluation of the applicant's overall potential. In reviewing applications, major attention is given to the student's long range goals, previous academic record, academic recommendations, GRE scores(PhD only), and evidence supporting the applicant's ability to communicate effectively in writing. The Department limits the number of new students to available resources and, thus, meeting minimum requirements does not ensure admission into the department. The minimum entrance requirements for School Counseling and Guidance are as follows: 1. A completed bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 credit hours. 2. A completed application form, along with copies of all undergraduate and graduate course work and payment of Graduate College application fees. 3. TOEFL: Total and TWE scores must be submitted for students for whom English is a second language. 4. Long Range Goals: A brief statement (200-500 words) of the applicant's long-range professional goals. 5. Submit 3 department recommendation forms completed by people who can attest to successful work experience and/or potential as a school counselor. 6. Submit a 500 word essay in which you discuss an article from a recent issue (2002 or later) of "Professional School Counseling." 7. Be available, after initial screening based on the above material, for an interview (in person or via phone). 8. If the applicant has published articles s/he had authored or co-authored, copies should be included. For a comprehensive listing of specific program requirements, please see the EDP web page (http://www.ed.arizona.edu/html/psychadmis.html).
