In 1993, faculty members in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics and Molecular & Cellular Biology formed a joint doctoral graduate program (BMCB) to provide students with broader training and a wider choice of research laboratories to choose for their dissertation. There are currently over 55 faculty members in the BMCB Graduate Program, including faculty representing 12 departments or interdisciplinary programs in addition to MCB and Biochemistry (now Chemistry & Biochemistry). Students in the BMCB program complete one of two programs of study leading to the PhD degree (Biochemistry or Molecular and Cellular Biology).
BMCB students specialize in areas of interest to the faculty. These include regulation of gene expression, neurobiology of simple systems, cytoskeletal function and control of cell movements, cell cycle control, structure and function of nucleic acids, plant developmental and molecular biology, invertebrate developmental genetics, protein structure and function, enzyme mechanisms, evolution of developmental processes, and yeast molecular biology. A listing of the faculty of the BMCB program and their research interests are on the program website.
BMCB program highlights are weekly journal club and research talks, a seminar program, and a yearly research retreat. All students receive financial assistance (stipends, tuition and health insurance).
