About

Background

In recognition of his outstanding vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to diversity and excellence, the Board of Directors of the University of Arizona Foundation has established a permanent endowment in honor of the 18th President of the University of Arizona, Peter "Pete" Likins. The nominee must be a current graduate student in their 1st or 2nd year at the time of application (May 16, 2022) and is a student who has, due to circumstances of whatever nature, overcome substantial adversity to be accepted for admission in the graduate program (Master's or doctoral) at the University of Arizona (UA).  In addition to illustrating the adverse circumstances that were overcome, the candidate will be evaluated based on their ability to express themselves with passion and vitality. Selection shall be determined by the Dean of the UA Graduate College, based on recommendation of the review committee. Applicants must be nominated by their UA academic unit (one per UA graduate program only). Applicants may not apply directly. The recipient may concurrently hold a graduate assistantship. Please note that this is not a recruitment award - it is for current graduate students.

 

Award Amount: $10,000 cash fellowship plus full base graduate tuition excluding mandatory fees and student health insurance

 

Application Deadline:  May 16, 2022 for 2022-23 academic year

 

Eligibility
  1. A current 1st or 2nd year doctoral or Master's student, domestic or international - Accelerated Master's Program (AMP),UA Online, JD and MD admitted students are not eligible to apply.
  2. Applicant must be in good academic standing
  3. Applicant must be nominated by the academic unit (one per academic unit) and may not apply directly
  4. Recipient may concurrently hold a graduate assistantship.

Instructions

Applicants must be nominated by their UA academic unit (one per UA graduate program only). Applicants may not apply directly.

Nominating program should fill out the application and upload the following documentation: 

  1. Nomination cover letter Cover from the UA academic unit head or director of graduate studies (one per degree granting program).
  2. Nominee written statements:
    • Two to three (2-3) page essay about the adverse circumstances that they have  overcome in order to pursue the dream of attaining a masters or doctoral degree at the UA.
    • Short summary (no more than 1 page) of why they are interested in pursuing the higher degree.
  3. One (1) letter of recommendation from a UA faculty advisor (may be same or different from the nominating faculty)
