You might! Some master’s programs will require additional units to earn the master’s after completion of one or more certificates in the stackable program. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies or Graduate Coordinator for the master’s degree you are interested in to determine whether additional units will be required and what those units will be. Completion of the master’s may entail completion of a capstone project, thesis, or additional courses.

No, only graduate certificates that have officially been approved as part of a stack.
Yes, one of the benefits of a stackable certificate program is the flexibility of entry and exit. If you do cease to be a graduate student and then return to complete a second certificate or the master’s in a stackable program you will need to apply to your new program via the Graduate College website. Please keep in mind the masters time limitation policy.
Yes, students who earn a master’s degree via stackable graduate certificates are sent a diploma. Please ensure you meet all Graduate College polices relevant to certificate students and that you complete the relevant GradPath forms prior to graduation.
No course can be used towards more than 2 programs; in addition there are limit on how many units can be shared between 2 certificates and how many units can be shared between master’s. Each department also reviews the student’s Plan of Study on GradPath to determine whether the courses on the Plan are appropriate towards that certificate/degree.
Yes, but not simultaneously. A student would have to complete their courses and programs offered on one campus, then change campus and complete the courses and programs offered on the other campus.
Departments wishing to establish an approved stackable program should submit a proposal using the Proposal Form for Stackable Certificate Program form (make sure you are logged in with your netid).
